  • Brooklyn Park Brings Light to Domestic Violence
    Posted On: Oct 02, 2018

The City of Brooklyn Park will be lighting various city buildings purple during October in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The buildings include City Hall, the Police Department North and South Stations, the Fire Department Central Station and the Operations & Maintenance Facility. Additionally, purple light bulbs will be available at the City Hall front desk for residents to pick up so that they may switch out their porch lights for the month of October. This “Purple Lights Initiative” is sponsored by the Brooklyn Park Human Rights Commission, in partnership with the Brooklyn Park Police Department and Cornerstone.

In a resolution approved by the City Council at the September 24 meeting, the Council proclaimed domestic violence has become a critical public health and welfare concern in Brooklyn Park. One in three women and one in four men will experience some form of intimate partner violence in their lifetime according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Domestic violence occurs in all communities. In Brooklyn Park, officers were dispatched 1,979 times to domestic-related calls in 2017. Because of this prevalence, the Brooklyn Park Police Department has dedicated resources to address domestic violence including partnering with Cornerstone to provide needed crisis intervention, housing, advocacy, education and therapeutic services to the individual(s) or family involved.
